Get to know our OmniCable Expert: Tim Laney, Senior Account Manager

After his baseball playing days ended…and graduating from the then Troy State University, Tim Laney joined Mayer Electric Supply in Birmingham, AL. Quickly moving throughout the company, he transferred to their Tampa facility and realized that the wire and cable industry was the perfect fit for him. In 1988, he made the transition to Houston Wire & Cable, which was acquired by OmniCable in 2021. He currently serves as a Senior Account manager at the company’s Atlanta branch and manages accounts in Alabama, Georgia and Tennessee.

Q: How do you stay updated with the latest trends and innovations in the industry?

A: I keep my ear close to the pulse of what, when, and where something is being introduced to our ever-changing industry. Take things like smart grid technology or renewable energy and how cable plays a vital role in transmitting either electricity over long distances or data to support high-speed transmission for thinks like the Internet of Things (IoT) and cloud computing. I’m always looking for ways to better assist our customers and find solutions for their project needs.

Q: How has the industry changed since you joined the company?

A: As to change, our industry is seemingly under a constant state of change. I mentioned a few of the developments in our industry above. Navigating the pandemic also brought about a tremendous amount of change for us and our distributor customers. The good news is that the lessons learned have helped shape our respective businesses and we’ve adapted well to our new normal. I also firmly believe my interaction and bond with my customers grew stronger during this time as we were all dealt with shared challenges together.

Q: What do you enjoy doing in your free time when you’re not at work?

A: My daughter is a horse trainer, and we live on a horse farm that houses and cares for 16 horses. It’s a full-time job away from selling wire and cable.

Q: What’s one thing your customers and coworkers might not know about you?

A: Since living on a farm, I have become very handy at construction projects that I never knew I could or would attempt. So, in addition to things like medium-voltage cable, I can also help with the construction of a horse pen.
